That’s how you know it’s a good story. When the characters resemble yourself or someone you truly wish to be.
I have a romance novelist friend who has won many Ritas for her work. Years ago, when she was a brand new author, her son and his buddy passed her in the kitchen as she was crying and washing dishes.
The friend asked her son, “What’s wrong with your mom?”
The boy, “Oh, one of her characters died today and she’s sad.”
Or, standing behind us.
